Melanotan 1 (MT1) (also known as Afamelanotide) is a synthetic peptide that mimics α-MSH a naturally occurring hormone that stimulates melanin production in the skin. It's used to darken skin pigmentation and has photoprotective effects (helps protect against UV damage). Melanotan 1 is known to:

• Bind to melanocortin 1 receptors (MC1R) in skin cells
• Stimulate the production of eumelanin (the darker, UV-protective form of melanin)
• Lead to a gradual, natural-looking tan without the need for heavy sun exposure

Not to be confused with Melanotan 2, which is similar but also has libido-enhancing effects and more side effects.
